Welcoming Fall

8 Sep

Hello,
I apologize that it has been a few days since my last post. The last two days have been filled with hot tea and chicken soup! I have felt a little under the weather. I have a big photo shoot tomorrow and a full week of school ahead. So I took some down time to watch old Audrey Hepburn movies and sip on some hot tea. Which worked out perfectly because Phoenix has had it’s first glimpse of fall with some nice rain. I’m so thankful because quit frankly I am sick of this heat!

Speaking of fall I have to say this is by far my favorite season! The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte is back! So yummy!!! I can ride my bike to school without wanting to die of heat exhaustion. Snuggle up with good book and a blanket as the rain drizzles down outside my window and my dog lies comfortably snoring beneath my feet.

(Night one of being sick. Cosmo, candles, and hot tea)

I love to cook in Fall. I love to cook year round but especially Winter and Fall. I love the stews, soups, and baked chicken recipes. In fact as ironic as it is getting sick only excited me more for the Fall months. As I debated what sounded appetizing all I really wanted was chicken soup. Maybe it is reminiscing my childhood sick days, but chicken soup is still comforting. I got passed my front door and stood there looking out into the rain. Wait…. I think I have what I need to make chicken soup…. I turned back around and rummaged through my pantry and refrigerator.

I had a cooked chicken from a previous meal, a bag of spinach, some  jasmine rice from the night before, cilantro (Which is used in Mexico mainly because it helps kill bacteria), lime, and other veggies.

1. I boiled the water and added chicken bouillon, then the veggies.
2. I added the pre-cooked chicken and rice. I threw in some noodles also.
3. I added a dash of lime, cilantro, garlic salt, and (my mothers secret) a dash of cinnamon.
4. I graded cheese, and chopped an avocado to top it off.

I love when you use the ingredients in your fridge to make a spontaneous meal! Not to mention it turned out delicious! Just what the doctor ordered! I felt surprisingly better after chicken soup, a little bit of Audrey, and some hot tea with spoon fulls of Honey (which has helped me sooth my throat)! I’m not big on taking medicine. I avoid it if possible and give my body a chance to do it’s magic.

As horrible as getting sick is it is often a reminder to slow down and take care of our health. Amongst healthy eating we also need to remember to rest.

XOXOXO,

Whitney

Girl Power

5 Sep

Hello,

Women these days are expected to take on some form of superhero! They are expected to maintain a full-time job, have dinner on the table by 6pm, and kids in bed by 8pm. All in a clean house with neatly folded linens. Come weekend they need preparation for mentally stimulating activities for the kids. Not to mention the perfect birthday parties and BBQ’s. The only problem is there is really not enough time in the day to do it all. These modern-day super hero expectations have applied some serious pressure on women all around the world. But I have to say we have most deafeningly rises to the occasion! All while maintaining class a pristine sense of style!

Women far more powerful than even we give ourselves credit for! Do you remember hearing about that mother who lifted the car off of her child?! If that were your child under that car you would have done the same! Just one phenomenal example of a woman rising to the occasion! We take on the corporate world, the baking and cooking world, the Martha Stuart of house keeping world and do it all in the latest fashions presented by Vogue!  We postpone our “big” dreams and settle for the career that allows us to be home in time to meet in greet the children. Or search for the perfect stay at home job so you can switch the laundry out while working. Women want their children to grow up with a perfect role model! We want to be educated and successful in order to who show children that they can also be the ultimate super hero! We can lift cars and bake the perfect birthday cakes all in the same day!

The secret of all of this is that we enjoy our God-given talents to do it all. Though at times we get overwhelmed and feel like we are on the brink of crashing and burning we know that we feel empowered! Women decided generations ago that we want it all! Now we have it all! The role of the wife, the mother, and the successful business woman!

Here is a Forbes list of women changing the world!!

Working women in film! Old Movies which I also recommend on watching. You know in your “spare time”… haha. But Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn is my favorite! Every girl dreams of prancing around in a little black dress and a tiara!

And this would not be complete without Gala Darling! The creator of Radical Self Love!! She helps women all over love who they are and chase their dreams! All while rocken pink sequins!

The Right Moment

4 Sep

Hello,

Have you ever met someone who inspires you? A person that lifts you up on a cloud you never even knew existed!! Someone who has taken a risk and just followed their desire to live and live well. I have a friend that I recently reconnected with. Sold his things and backpacked through Europe alone. Just decided he wanted to do it. But the punch line is… HE DID!!

We all talk about the things we want in life. The places we want to go and the places we want to see, the type of people we inspire to be. So what holds us back? Perhaps it is fear that holds us back? Lucky for him he is the no fear and no worries type of guy. Sure selling my things and going out on a limb to travel the world sounds amazing if you are the “live in the moment” type of person. But what about the rest of us who think in the terms of the future? My thought process is… What happens when the money is gone and I return home to nothing? I am constantly looking for more in life. Looking for the right career, the right book idea, the right moment to capture. It seems it never comes my way.

My father recently expressed to me “People constantly tell me how lucky I am. But I tell them.. it seems the harder I worked in life the luckier I got”. Wise man!! I had an epiphany… waiting will only be followed by more waiting. The moment is not a magical moment. The moment is the moment you decide to create it! To work for it! To go after it! You will fail!! My father has told me many stories of when he was young and first starting his business. He came close to failing over and over. At one point he did a big job and paid upfront for the materials to do the job. When he went to collect his paycheck the man had skipped out-of-town. Left my father in debt and he owed his workers that helped do the job. But he kept fighting, kept pushing, and kept going. He has reached success in his life I can only hope I achieve. Following in his footsteps is quit frankly…nerve wrecking. He just DID IT!!

My point is that I have been patiently waiting for life to throw me my big break. I recently realized that if I continue waiting I will forever be just waiting. Some people make success look so easy. I’m surrounded by people in my life that have been overwhelming successful! It is quit intimidating. But I will get there. Because I have decided to just DO IT! Now the hard part is deciding what IT is. Is saving the world too big of a goal?! haha.

I will keep you posted on what my new goals will be and how I plan to make them happen. Till next time I leave you with some links of things that make my days brighter! These are two friends I admire for chasing their dreams and creating their own moments to make their dreams come true!

Brittany inspires me as a friend and a professional! Her blog happy Brittany is so bright and always brings a smile to my face!! Check out her blog at….

I especially love the “Your story in six words”. I shall try this and you will read it soon!

My friend Austin Trout is now the Middle weight Champion of the World!! So proud of him! I have watched him train and work very hard over the years!  I know he has not waited on this opportunity but instead chased it! He worked for it and gives it all he has got! I really hope I am able to make the fight Dec 1st in Madison Square Garden!

http://www.examiner.com/topic/austin-trout/articles

Trout told ESPN, “I’m trying to put this legacy together and this is what I needed. I am ecstatic right now,” I get to check off a few things on my bucket list with this fight. I get to fight in the Garden, I get to fight a superstar in the Garden, and I get to fight on HBO, if that’s where this fight is.”

Keep working! Keep pushing!

You make your own luck in life!!

Till next time!!!

Pinterest Has Become My Muse!!

Hello,

I am sure…in fact I am positive that I’m not the only woman addicted to Pinterest! I am constantly browsing and dreaming of building a house with a library full of the recommended books, a perfect back porch and a Pinterest perfect garden! I will of course be the perfect Pinterest house wife and do all the cute activities that are posted for mothers to do with their kids. Not to mention cook all the delicious home-made meals… and then I get a reality check!! LOL.

We can’t be the perfect women in the Pinterest dream world! But we can come pretty dang close!! I have been working on a few of the Pinterest recipes and with some adjusting I found a few great recipes that worked out great! So here is a crepe recipe that has been approved by yours truly!! More recipes from interest to come!

I started with a crepe breakfast recipe!

You will need:

Crepe batter recipe. (I purchased from world market a basic crepe mix. Followed instructions on the back).

Vanilla Greek Yogurt

Fresh Fruit of Choice (Strawberries for me)

Sliced almonds

Powdered Sugar

1. Mix batter. Spray pan with non stick spray. I start the heat on Medium.

Your Crepe should look something like this…

2. Spoon Yogurt in the middle. Add sliced strawberries and almonds.

4. Roll like a burrito! Sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Add some strawberries for color and Almonds for crunch!!

5. ENJOY!!

After you whip this up for breakfast your guests will think you are a professional chef! It is pretty healthy and delicious!!

Pinterest, after some adjustments this was a great recipe!!

Update on my DIY Garden

3 Sep

Hello!!

I woke up this morning ready to read for class and after going over my syllabus I realized it is Memorial Day! LOL. I’m not used to having random days off. But I was relieved when I realized I had the day to update my blog and paint my nails! Here is an update on my DIY garden!

Who knew sprouts grew so rapidly?! I sure didn’t! But I am like a child checking my plants every day and night! Here are some picture to show you how quickly they have grown in three days! I guess living in Phoenix has its benefits after all! The climate is perfect for planting and growing veggies and herbs! I cannot wait to use them in my cooking experiments but for now the process of watching them grow is equally fulfilling!

First row is the wheat grass! Which is really only good for the appearance unless you have a wheat grass juicer!

My second row is basic alfalfa sprouts which I cannot wait to try in a salad or on a sandwich!

My last row is bean sprouts which grew the most rapid! I hear they are great in stir fry!! Excited to find out!!

My DIY Garden

1 Sep

Hello,

So as I promised yesterday, I would start this blog by “bragging” about my new herb garden! I am so excited! I am not quit ready to show you the entire garden just yet. But I will give you a sneak peak of one of my DIY garden projects! I am a thrift store addict!! Why buy something new and spend more money when it is much more fun to save money?! Not to mention being able to do as you please with the treasures you find! So I stumbled on this little three drawer cabinet for $4.99 at Goodwill!! I have a small balcony so the small drawers worked out! But this can be done with a full size dresser as well. Let me just say that the first few images were with my iPhone! I apologize about the quality! The last two were with my cannon! The difference in quality is obvious!

Step 1.. SCORE!!

Step 2. Make it your own! I chose to simply spray paint. I considered a stencil. Maybe I will still add some for a pop of color later. But for now I kept it simple.

Image

Step 3. Put soil in drawers and plant your seeds of choice! Leave the drawers staggered so each plant has room to grow. I chose wheat grass, sprouts and bean sprouts.

Image

Step 4. Water and watch grow!! I was surprised that after two short days I had sprouts!

This is one of the fun steps I took to planting to plant a garden in my small upstairs apartment! Even people in NYC can have fresh veggies and herbs! I am so Excited to show the rest of my garden to you! I hope it inspires each of you to get creative and plant your own garden!

My Creative Reverie

1 Sep

Hello,

I am Whitney and as you know by now this is my creative reverie! I am constantly baking and working on creative projects. I am a professional photographer and a full-time student majoring in Anthropology. I know… I know…Most people look at me with a confused expression when I state this! But they actually complement one another rather well! Considering Anthropology is the study of people and I photograph people. I am constantly in captivation of culture, religion, and emotions that drive people to be who they are.

Just yesterday I planted a herb garden! I am like a child checking it every hour to see if something new has grown or changed. Check to see if there is a sprout that was not there the previous hour! Even at 25 years old it is exciting to see how miraculous life can be! I never do things the average way. My herb garden is not just a typical garden. It is inside my home planted in random containers from goodwill! This is how I have been since a child.

I don’t do things the “normal” way. I never have! I am proud to say that I never will! Which should be interesting for my readers! I hope to inspire each and every one of you in one way or another! I have yet to decide what direction this blog will go. But I am excited to see which direction the wind blows us!  My next post should be about my amazing new herb garden! I can’t wait to share my secrets!
